Magh Mela 2027 at the Sangam in Prayagraj runs from Makar Sankranti on 14 January to Mahashivratri on 6 March 2027. Its biggest bathing day is Mauni Amavasya on Saturday, 6 February, and Kalpvas runs from Paush Purnima on 22 January to Maghi Purnima on 20 February.

This guide gives the full snan calendar, which days to pick or avoid, and how to reach the mela by road or air, including what happens to cabs on the big bathing days.

Dates follow the Hindu calendar. A few calendars list Makar Sankranti on 15 January; the mela administration confirms final dates closer to the event.

What Magh Mela is, and what Kalpvas means

Magh Mela is held every year on the sandbanks of the Sangam, where the Ganga and Yamuna meet, during the Hindu month of Magh. It is smaller than a Kumbh but still huge: for the 2026 edition, the UP government planned for 12–15 crore visitors over about six weeks, across roughly 800 hectares, with 42 parking sites and around 3,800 state buses, including electric shuttles between the city and the mela area.

Kalpvasis are pilgrims who live in tents on the mela grounds for the whole month, from Paush Purnima to Maghi Purnima (22 January to 20 February in 2027), bathing daily and keeping a simple routine. If you are visiting a family member who is doing Kalpvas, ask for their sector number and nearest pontoon bridge before you set off. A tent city without an address is very hard to navigate.

Which Magh Mela Day Should You Go?

If the specific snan matters to you, go on that day and plan carefully. If you simply want to bathe at the Sangam and see the mela, an ordinary weekday between the big dates is a far better experience: shorter walks, room on the ghats, and roads that move.

Be especially careful on Mauni Amavasya. It draws the largest crowd, and at the 2025 Maha Kumbh a crowd crush near the Sangam in the early hours of Mauni Amavasya cost many lives. If you are travelling with elderly relatives or small children, choose a quieter date.

How to Reach Magh Mela 2027 by Road

FromDistanceDrive time (normal days)
Varanasi~122 km~2 hr 20 min
Ayodhya~164 km~3.5–4 hr
Lucknow~202–205 km~4–5 hr
Delhi~650–700 km~9–11 hr

Distances from HurryUp route and city pages. Snan days add a lot of time near Prayagraj because of diversions.

•       By air: Prayagraj Airport at Bamrauli is about 12 km west of the city and roughly 18–22 km from the Sangam, normally a 45–60 minute drive.

•       Cabs stop at parking, not the river. On major snan days, private vehicles are directed to designated parking areas on the edge of the mela, and the last stretch is on foot or by shuttle bus. Book your drop to the parking area your route is assigned, not to "the Sangam".

•       Fix the pickup point in advance. Agree on a landmark and a time with your driver before you walk in. Phone signal can be patchy in dense crowds.

•       Arrive the day before a big snan if you can. Entry routes get diverted from the evening before, and the first hours of the morning are the most crowded.

Other Big Melas in 2027

Prayagraj is not the only mela on the calendar next year. The Haridwar Ardh Kumbh runs from 14 January to 20 April 2027, and four of its bathing days (6 February, 11 February, 20 February and 6 March) fall on the same dates as Magh Mela snans. Expect busy highways across Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand on those days, and book cabs early.

Later in the year, the Nashik–Trimbakeshwar Simhastha Kumbh holds its main Amrit Snans on 2 August, 31 August and 11 September 2027 in Nashik, with the final Trimbakeshwar snan on 12 September.

After Maha Kumbh 2025: When Is the Next Kumbh at Prayagraj?

The Maha Kumbh at Prayagraj ran from 13 January to 26 February 2025 and drew an estimated 66 crore visitors. The next Kumbh-scale events at the Sangam are the Ardh Kumbh in 2031 and the Purna Kumbh in 2037. In the years between, the Magh Mela is how Prayagraj keeps the tradition going every winter, which is why this guide now focuses on Magh Mela 2027.

Booking a Cab for Magh Mela

Mela trips are usually family or group trips, so match the vehicle to the group. A tempo traveller (9 to 26 seats) is often easier than two or three cabs that have to find each other in a parking lot. For a single drop where you will stay several days, a one-way cab makes more sense than paying for a driver to wait, and return booking can bring the fare down for the trip home. You can also suggest your own fare with Offer Your Rate.

Book early for the big snan days, especially 6 February, 11 February, 20 February and 6 March, when the Haridwar Ardh Kumbh draws travellers on the same dates. Ask before confirming whether tolls, parking and state entry taxes are included, because outstation trips across state lines often add them.

Plan Around the Dates, Not the Distance

At Magh Mela, the date you choose decides the trip more than the route does. A Saturday snan in February can turn a four-hour drive into a full day, while a weekday in between gives you the same river with a fraction of the crowd. Pick your date first, then book the car.
